If you’re planning a trip to Big Sky, Montana, you’re already on the right track. With stunning mountain views, year-round outdoor adventures, and that perfect mix of wilderness and comfort, Big Sky is one of the most unforgettable places in the West.
But before you dive into your ski day or hiking trail, there’s one thing you need to figure out: how to get to Big Sky. Luckily, Old Faithful and Friends makes that part easy.

The Closest Airport to Big Sky
The nearest airport is Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), located about 50 miles north of Big Sky. Most travelers fly into Bozeman from major hubs like Denver, Seattle, Salt Lake City, or Dallas. From there, you’ve got about an hour’s drive ahead of you to reach the mountain.
That drive is beautiful, no doubt, but in winter or during busy travel weeks, it can be a bit unpredictable. That’s exactly why we offer a better option.

The Drive from Bozeman to Big Sky: Route, Turns & What to Expect
If you're driving from Bozeman (or Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport) to Big Sky, here’s exactly how the route works and what you’ll see along the way:
You leave the airport and turn right onto Frontage Road / MT‑205 for about 1.4 miles. Then you turn left onto Jackrabbit Lane (MT‑291), which in about 7.5 miles becomes US‑191 / Gallatin Road at a four‑way stop called “Four Corners.” From there you head south on US‑191 through the Gallatin Canyon for roughly 34 miles. The junction with Lone Mountain Trail / MT‑64, you turn right (west) and drive up into Big Sky — MT‑64 is about 9 miles long and connects Big Sky Resort and Mountain Village to US‑191.
What’s the Drive Like?
The route from Bozeman to Big Sky follows US Highway 191 through the scenic Gallatin Canyon. It’s one of the most beautiful drives in Montana, with forested hillsides, a winding river, and often some wildlife along the way.
But while the views are impressive, winter weather can make driving challenging. That’s why so many visitors prefer to let experienced local drivers handle the trip while they sit back and enjoy the scenery.

Do You Need a Car in Big Sky?
Not really. If you’re staying near Big Sky Resort, Mountain Village, or any of the nearby accommodations, you’ll have easy access to shuttles and resort amenities. Parking can be limited in busy months, and road conditions can be tricky — especially for those not used to mountain driving.
Many of our guests find they don’t need a rental car at all when visiting Big Sky. With our shuttle service, you can travel light, avoid the stress, and focus on your vacation.
