Bison Don’t Do Selfies: Safety Tips for Yellowstone

Here at Old Faithful and Friends Shuttle, we love helping people experience the magic of Yellowstone National Park—geysers, waterfalls, wide-open skies, and yes, those iconic bison wandering the valleys. Seeing a bison in the wild is one of the most unforgettable parts of visiting Yellowstone. They’re majestic, massive, and truly something to behold.

But here’s the thing: they’re wild—and that means they deserve respect and space.

We want you to have an incredible, safe adventure, so let’s talk about how to admire these amazing animals without putting yourself (or the bison) at risk.

Bison Safety Tips:

Give Bison Their Space—At Least 25 Yards

Bison may seem calm, but they’re unpredictable and very fast. Always stay at least 25 yards away—that’s about two bus lengths. If you're unsure, just stay by your Yellowstone shuttle or enjoy the view from inside the vehicle. It’s the safest way to watch wildlife without getting too close.

Please, No Bison Selfies

We get it—bison are incredibly photogenic. But getting close for that “perfect shot” is one of the most common reasons people get hurt in the park. Use your zoom, stay back, and let us help you find safe photo ops from the shuttle. Our drivers know all the best spots for bison viewing.

Bison Can Run Up to 35 MPH

It’s hard to believe, but these animals can move faster than you might think. If a bison feels threatened, it may charge—and you don’t want to be in its way. Keep your distance, especially if you see signs of agitation like head shaking or pawing at the ground.

Don’t Block the Path

If a bison is on or near a trail, boardwalk, or road, give it time to move along. Never try to sneak around it, and definitely don’t try to herd it. Just hang back and enjoy the view—trust us, it’s worth the wait.

Leave the Driving (and the Spotting) to Us

One of the best ways to enjoy Yellowstone’s wildlife is from the comfort of a Yellowstone shuttle. With Old Faithful and Friends, you’ll have a local driver who knows where the bison like to roam, so you can sit back, relax, and experience the park safely. No stress, no crowds, just stunning views and amazing animals.

Share the Knowledge

If you’re visiting with kids, friends, or folks who are new to national parks, take a minute to talk about bison safety before you head out. A little awareness goes a long way—and helps keep both people and wildlife safe.

Let’s Keep Yellowstone Wild—and You Safe

Bison are a powerful symbol of Yellowstone, and seeing them in their natural habitat is something you’ll remember forever. By giving them space and respecting their wild nature, you’re helping protect these amazing animals—and making sure everyone has a safe, fun time in the park.

Thanks for riding with Old Faithful and Friends Shuttle. Whether you’re heading to Old Faithful, Lamar Valley, or anywhere in between, we’re proud to be your go-to Yellowstone shuttle for safe, friendly, and unforgettable adventures.

See you on the trail (or the shuttle)!
